where the eagles dares

What is it?

It’s an intensive photographic workshop that doesn’t take place in a classroom. Instead, we’ll learn while pedalling along the roads in some of the most beautiful parts of Piedmont. Do you want to tell a photographic story about your two-week trip, or just post beautiful images on Instagram after your Sunday ride? Either way, this is the right class for you. Over the course of two days, we’ll explore some wonderful landscapes, and also delve into the world of travel photography, with a particular focus on cycle touring and bikepacking. It doesn’t matter what kind of camera you like to work with, we’ll deal with composition, colour management, shooting in B&W, and how best to use natural light. We’ll also touch on how to take care of your equipment while you’re on the road, how to figure out what is and isn’t essential, and of course, offer a few pro tips.

Where is it?

For starters, we’ll ride Colle dell’Assietta (other routes will be confirmed soon).

What should I bring?

A bicycle and helmet:  MTB, just make sure you have tyres with a thread that’s suitable for off-road.

A camera: If possible, avoid bringing a heavy SLR, or large lenses. You want to keep weight to a minimum.

Clothing: In addition to your bike kit, be sure to bring suitable clothing for off the bike. It’s usually warm during the day in the mountains, but it can get chilly in the shade and at night, so you should pack accordingly.

Bikepacking bags: I can lend you some if you don’t have them

Can I do the course with my smartphone?

Of course! But a real camera is better. I’ll explain why.

Can I come with an e-bike

yes and if you need one we can rent one in Sestriere

Where will we stay?

We’ve organised comfortable accommodation where we will also have dinner. There is also space to view and discuss our work.

What kind of cyclist is this for?

The Assietta is a medium-difficulty climb on dirt roads. It is a medium difficult route and there are no extremely steep sections, but most of it is unpaved. The pace will be slow enough, because we’ll need time to enjoy the best views and photograph everything that catches our attention. If you have any doubts, get in touch and we can discuss it.

What’s the plan?

We’ll meet on Saturday morning in Sestriere. Departure is at 08:00 and the route is 23km 900mt of climbing. We’ll eat a packed lunch on the road, and there’ll be time for a shower before we meet again to discuss our photos, then dinner and bed. On Sunday, after breakfast we come back to Sestriere.
